What better way to experience Pittsburgh's three rivers than to get out on them? Kayaking is an enjoyable, beginner-friendly way to see the city from a whole different vantage point.
Kayak Pittsburgh Downtown is within easy walking distance of all downtown locations and the North Side. To get to the rental shop, cross over the Roberto Clemente Bridge and take the staircase on the left (nearest PNC Park) down to the waterfront walkway. Turn left and head directly underneath the bridge. There at Kayak Pittsburgh the friendly and helpful staff will get you ready to head out on the water.
Kayak Pittsburgh North can be found at the North Park Boathouse along North Park Lake, which is about 14 miles from Pittsburgh. Head up Route 19 from Pittsburgh, turn right/East onto Ingomar Road/Yellow Belt, left at Babcock Boulevard, and left at Pierce Mill Road. The Boathouse is an elegant stone building you can't miss!
The kayaks that are available are flat-water kayaks - they are longer and more stable than the whitewater kayaks that most people think of. We like to describe the flat-water kayaks as similar to canoes but easier to steer.
All participants need to sign a risk acknowledgement form (Minors under 18 must have a parent/guardian sign the risk waiver), wear a PFD and will be given basic safety and paddling instruction. KP requires a driver's license to be held as a deposit while you are on the water. Download a risk waiver here.
Kayaking is easy to learn and is great for beginners. No experience is necessary and most folks learn how to manage a kayak in 10 to 15 minutes.
Here are some FAQ's

It is easy to learn and after a few minutes of instruction from our
staff, you will be equipped to head out onto the river and enjoy the
city from a whole new vantage point.
Do I need a reservation?
No. Walk-up rentals are ongoing, so come on over anytime! If you
have a big group and want to request a time to make sure kayaks are
available, you can request a time by calling (412) 969-9090 for
KP Downtown, and (724) 935-1968 for KP North.
Is kayaking physically strenuous?
Kayaking is like riding a bike; you can get in a great workout or
just relax and enjoy the scenery.
What should I wear?
Whatever you're comfortable in! While you should not expect to get
excessively wet, your paddle will drip a bit as you move along the
river. Layers are usually best - be prepared for direct sunlight
or a cool breeze. All boaters must wear a personal floatation device at all times,
so try not to wear a sweater or jacket that is
excessively bulky.
How long can I paddle?
Minimum rental is one hour. Kayaks can be rented for additional 1/2 hours
or for the full day - stay out as long as you like!
We will be open until the end of October.
